Principal Designer · Gemstone Expert · 12th Generation
Thomas Leyser has spent his life among exceptional coloured gemstones.
Born into one of Idar-Oberstein’s longstanding gemstone families, he grew up surrounded by the stones, cutters and craftsmen that have shaped the region for centuries. His grandfather, Otto Leyser, built the family’s international gemstone business around the sourcing and cutting of rough stones from Brazil and other important deposits around the world.
That gemstone expertise continues to shape his approach to fine jewellery.
Today, Thomas runs the LEYSER atelier in Idar-Oberstein and remains the house’s principal designer, creating one-of-a-kind and bespoke pieces around exceptional coloured gemstones.
The stone comes first.
For Thomas, design begins with the individual character of the gemstone — its colour, cut, proportions and personality.
Rather than asking a stone to conform to a predetermined design, the jewel develops around it. Gold, platinum and diamonds provide structure, contrast and proportion, while allowing the coloured gemstone to remain at the centre.
The result is jewellery intended to be worn and enjoyed: distinctive without being dictated by fashion, and made with the craftsmanship of Idar-Oberstein behind it.
Thirteen generations. Still a family affair.
Thomas represents the twelfth generation of a family whose work with gemstones in the Nahe valley can be traced back to 1639.
Today, he works alongside the next generation of the Leyser family, continuing an approach to gemstones shaped by nearly four centuries of cutting, sourcing and craftsmanship.
