Paraíba Tourmaline — A Colour Apart

Some colours are difficult to describe until you have seen them in a gemstone.

Paraíba tourmaline is one of them.

First discovered in Brazil in the late 1980s, these copper-bearing tourmalines introduced a colour unlike almost anything previously known in the gem world — vivid blues and greens with an intensity that can appear almost illuminated from within.

It is a gemstone that changed expectations of what tourmaline could be.

The colour comes first

The characteristic appearance of Paraíba tourmaline is associated with copper in its chemical composition. Depending on the individual stone, its colour can move from turquoise and lagoon blue through green to deeper blue and violet-blue.

But chemistry only explains part of the attraction.

Two stones of similar size and laboratory description can look remarkably different beside one another. Saturation, tone, transparency, cut and the particular balance of blue and green all matter.

This is why we prefer to choose Paraíba the way we choose any important coloured gemstone: stone by stone.

Rare by nature

The original deposits were discovered in the Brazilian state of Paraíba. Copper-bearing tourmalines were subsequently found in Mozambique and Nigeria, expanding the palette and availability of the material while leaving exceptional examples — particularly stones combining strong colour, transparency and size — remarkably scarce.

For collectors, that combination is what matters.

Not simply Paraíba on a report, but the quality of the stone in front of you.

From stone to jewel

Some Paraíbas ask for very little around them. Others lend themselves to combinations with diamonds, platinum or carefully matched companion stones.

The design begins with the individual gem: its proportions, colour and character.
